Simple Interest Simple interest is calculated on a principal amount. The simple interest is calculated by the formula; simple interest = (P * R * T/100). Here P is the principal amount borrowed or lend. R is the rate of interest in percentage. T is the total time period. The abbreviation used for representing simple interest is SI. The Total amount that is due after the time period is the sum of the initial principal amount and the simple interest amount calculated. Example 1: Find the simple interest on the amount $ 5000 with a rate of interest 5% and what is the amount due after a time period of 2 years? Solution: Given Principal amount = $ 5000. The rate of interest percentage= 5% = 5/100 = 0.05. Time period mentioned = 2 years. Simple Interest SI = I * R *T. SI = 5000 * 0.05 * 2 = $ 500. The One Study Tip That Will Change the Way You Learn Suzy S. As youre learning new material, youll notice that some study tips work well for you, while others may not. If youre a visual learner, heres a great technique to try from Olympia, WA tutor  Tali H No doubt about it, learning material on your own can be a challenge, especially if it’s under the pressure of an upcoming test. In today’s fast-paced world, where there is so much to learn and so much to do, maximizing “study time” is crucial. Lucky for you, I have one simple study tip that works amazingly well. It allowed me to keep my high school record full of As (even with multiple Honors and AP classes) and my GPA at 3.95 while balancing sports, a job, and a social life. What is it you may ask? Make your windows (yes, real glass windows in your home, office, living space, etc.) a learning canvas. This technique is the foundation of my study process. It will change the way you study. 1. Getting Set-Up In order to write on windows, you obviously need windows. The space you’ll need depends to some extent on what it is you want to learn. For instance, if you’re just trying to memorize a few formulas, a small bathroom or bedroom window can be perfect because you don’t need that much room and you’ll likely see the windows quite often (repetition is important). However, if you’re trying to learn a whole chapter of information, then you’ll want a larger window area. My house happens to be set up perfectly for this type of learning. The whole upper story is windows, sometimes making me feel as though I live in a fish bowl. Yet, even a house with only a few windows will work (check with other members of the house though to make sure they’re okay with drawing on the windows). I recommend using your dining room windows because you will see your study material every time you sit down to eat. 2. Buying Your Supplies Buy NEON whiteboard markers (when erased they leave NO marks). DO NOT buy regular whiteboard markers, as these will not show up well on your windows unless the light is really good. I recommend Expo Neon Dry Erase Markers  because it shows up extremely well. Keep in mind that even some neon whiteboard markers can be hard to see. What’s great about neon is that it shows up in the dark. So when I do my evening and late-night study sessions, I can see clearly (even with lights on, regular whiteboard markers tend to fade into the blackness of the night outside). Also, buy lots of colors, the more you like the colors the better (you’ll be seeing them a lot). My color collection includes a bright aqua green, a bubblegum pink, a zesty orange, a lemon yellow, and a beautiful sky blue (which came package together for around $10). 3. Using the Windows There are many, many ways to use your “canvas for learning.” First of all, a big idea behind using the windows as a whiteboard is that you’re going to teach someone else the material once you’ve gotten it all written up. Teaching others is one of the best study tips out there, as its a great way to learn material. It forces you to go over the material yourself, discern what’s important, and then regurgitate the material in your own words. In my case, I taught my dad (who LOVES to learn) or my peer group (we would draw up windows simultaneously and then present to each other). Keeping the goal of presenting in mind not only gives you an end goal but it also helps you to be more organized. Even if you have no one to present to, I encourage you to pretend you have an audience and go ahead and present. Note: Besides learning the material, this learning method has a host of other benefits. One, you are up moving around (and trust me, erasing your work is quite an arm workout). Two, you can let the inner artist in you out through diagrams, pictures, and the general color-coded organization of information. That’s right, DRAW, DRAW, DRAW. Three, you can work on your presentation and public speaking skills. 4. Making it Interactive Oftentimes, when I’m working on my “study canvas,” I’ll make fill-in-the-blanks when something I need to memorize comes up. I recommend numbering the fill-in-the-blanks and keeping a piece of paper that gives the answer to what word or phrase is supposed to go there. Note: This is one of the more time-consuming methods when it comes to study tips. It takes a lot longer to write up all your notes with diagrams and interactive features. However, it is worth it. This is quality learning, meaning once you’ve learned it, you’ve really learned it. Plus, the visibility of your windows allows you to repeatedly see the information you want to learn. Our years of experience with thousands of children have taught us that it is far more effective to encourage children to work hard on homework and in school than it is to encourage them to strive for high grades and test scores. Our beliefs on this are rooted in research: the right kind of praise inspires motivation, and therefore, achievement. Also, studies show that one of the key dimensions of student motivation is control, a students belief that there is a direct link between his or her actions and successful outcomes. At Huntington, we strive to not only build students academic competence and ability, but also nurture the development of their intrinsic motivation: the desire to complete tasks for the self-satisfaction that results from doing so. We know that students who are intrinsically motivated are more likely to take ownership of their success in school and put forth the effort that it requires. A growth mindset is the belief that intelligence isnt a fixed trait, but rather, one that can be nurtured and developed. Children who have a growth mindset understand that effort is the way to become smarter and recognize that a challenge is an opportunity to learn, not a road block. When parents hold high, but achievable expectations for children, praise their efforts, encourage them to learn from their mistakes and point out often that such a combination is what leads to learning and improvement, they fuel their childrens intrinsic motivation. Just as important, such actions send the message that learning is continuous and requires persistence. Take note when your child works hard and makes progress. Whether in kindergarten, middle school, or college students and their parents are excited to have a little bit of time off during the winter holiday. However, students still have a few days left to study for finals and hand in those last-minute assignments before they can enjoy some family time this winter. Although each student is following their path, there are some things that every student can do this December to end the year strong our private Orange Country academic tutoring will help you score high on your finals. 1.   Check your GPA The first thing older students should do is look online to see what their current GPA is. Many teachers and professors offer extra credit for optional assignments that students must complete by the end of the semester to boost their grade in the class. Students in their college prep and college years will find our current GPA especially critical to their success. 2. Work out a new time management system Many students, regardless of their age, will find out that their current time management simply isnt working anymore. Students will have more assignments and a lower energy level as the school year progresses and completing assignments in an efficient manner is a key to their overall success. Now is a great time for students to sit down and figure out how they need to adjust their schedule or priorities to make the remainder of the year fruitful and low stress. 5. Dont forget about a work-life balance Its also really important that students remember to have a work-life balance. Many students sit in a classroom for six or seven hours and then come home to do the same thing over again to complete their assignments on time. This can become cumbersome very quickly, and students will miss out on downtime, socialization, and physical activities that are all essential to their overall well-being. One of the reasons I decided to au pair in Spain is because I’ve always had an interest in learning Spanish. I completed four years of Spanish classes in high school, but unfortunately, I did not continue my language studies in college. I could kick myself for that now. In preparation of living in a village where the majority of people do not speak any English, I brushed up on my Spanish with the help of a website called italki. You can learn absolutely anything nowadays without even leaving the comfort of your home thanks to the internet. It’s amazing. My boyfriend, Taylor, discovered the wonders of italki when he was searching for native speakers to practice his Spanish with (unlike me, he actually stuck with it in college). He also used the site to learn some Italian before we went to Europe! So, what exactly is italki? According to its website, italki’s mission is to make human connections between language learners and language teachers. It believes anyone anywhere in the world can become fluent in a foreign language. Using technology, italki is revolutionizing the way people learn foreign languages. For example, this platform provides a way for someone interested in learning Spanish (me) to connect with a professional Spanish tutor. My tutor, Rocio, lives in Madrid and has a master’s degree in teaching Spanish as a second language. From mid-July until my departure, we Skyped twice a week for hour-long lessons. Each lesson costs approximately 120 â€" 140 italki credits (ITC) which is equivalent to 12 â€" 14 USD. Now, that’s super reasonable considering most private language tutors charge upwards of $20 an hour. You purchase ITC prior to scheduling sessions with a tutor. After the completion of the lesson, you receive an email asking you to confirm the lesson took place. Once you do, the tutor receives his or her payment through italki. It’s that simple! Worried about not knowing what you’re paying for when you sign-up for a session? italki gives you three trial-sessions at a majorly discounted rate (50 ITC or 5 USD). It allows you to try different tutors out to see if their teaching style is a match for your learning style. In addition to connecting language students with professional tutors, italki also offers informal tutoring. Informal tutors are individuals who don’t have a teaching degree but have a background that allows them to help you learn a language. For example, some informal tutors are interpreters or translators. I’ve never had a lesson with an informal tutor, but I think it might be a good option for people on a budget. Most lessons with an informal tutor are significantly cheaper than lessons with a professional tutor. It varies from tutor to tutor, but I’ve seen rates as low as six ITC or six USD an hour. After you set up a profile, you can start chatting with native speakers in whatever language you’re studying. These conversations might start within italki messenger but later migrate to email, Skype, Facebook, Viber or What’s App. Every conversation is generally a 50/50 exchange. For example, for the first part of the chat with my language partner, we would speak in Spanish (the language I’m studying). Then, for the second part of the chat, we would speak in English (the language my partner is studying). Oh, and did I mention finding and chatting with language partners is absolutely free? They showed us around their city, cooked us traditional Andalusian foods and provided us with a comfortable room to stay in free of charge. Staying with locals (and more importantly, friends) really made our time in Andalusia special. If it weren’t for italki, Taylor would have never met Daniel, and we might have never had the opportunity to experience the Andalusian culture so intimately.
